If your house goes through books fast, a reading subscription can sound appealing. Kindle Unlimited is Amazon's ebook subscription. It can be great for some families and a waste for others.
What Kindle Unlimited is
Kindle Unlimited lets members borrow from a large catalog of ebooks, and some audiobooks, for a monthly fee. You read on a Kindle device or the free Kindle app on a phone or tablet. Amazon sets the price and any trial, and they change.
What it does not include
Many popular new releases and big-publisher bestsellers are not in Kindle Unlimited. Before signing up, search for a few books your family actually wants and see if they are marked as included.
Who it tends to fit
- Readers who finish several books a month
- Families who enjoy series and are open to new authors
- Readers who like trying genres without buying each book
Kids and content
The catalog includes adult books, so set up kid profiles or parental controls on devices. Look up children's titles on Parental Compass for age fit and content notes.
Compare with your library
Library apps lend ebooks for free, often including newer bestsellers, but with waiting lists. Many families use both: the library for new hits, a subscription for quick, wide reading.
